What to Consider When Buying an Electric Kettle
Even though all electric kettles are designed to boil water, there are still some significant differences between models that you need to consider when choosing the right one for your home (or office). Although I’ll only be looking at KitchenAid Kettles today, all of these considerations should be factored into your purchase, even if you go with another brand.
Size
If you are only making one or two cups of coffee (or tea) at a time, then size may not be as important to you. That being said, you may want to opt for a smaller kettle, although having something a bit bigger may benefit you by providing options for you. Conversely, if you are making large pots of coffee or need to boil a lot of water for whatever reason, then you need to ensure that your kettle can produce enough water for your needs. Most units are sized in liters, ranging from one to two and a half liters total. Typically, the “standard” size of electric kettles is 1.7 liters, but if you need something smaller or larger, there are options from which to choose.
Material
There are three main types of electric kettle, with regards to what material it is made of. They are:
- Plastic: plastic kettles are the cheapest, but that also means that they are usually not the best. Some of them have the heating element exposed, which can lead to lime deposits in your water. Similarly, low-end plastic kettles may leach chemicals into your water or produce a foul odor when heating, so keep in mind which brands are better than others.
- Glass: the best thing about glass kettles is the fact that you can see the water boiling, so you know when it’s ready. The downside of glass is that it can get hot, which can be a safety hazard. Otherwise, using glass should be safer than plastic, at least with regards to any chemicals in your water.
- Stainless Steel: I highly recommend steel for your kettle, as this is the material that is least likely to degrade or wear down over time. Also, some steel kettles are designed to cool rapidly, making them much safer. Finally, metal is a much better heat conductor, so you can heat up your water much faster in some cases.
Safety
Because you’re dealing with hot water, safety should be one of your primary concerns when choosing an electric kettle. That being said, there are usually some safety features that come standard on most kettles. However, if you notice that these functions are not present, I would suggest avoiding that kettle. These features are:
- Auto Shut-Off: Once the water reaches boiling temperature, the unit should turn off to prevent over boiling and potential spills.
- Dry Boil Protection: Accidents happen, especially in the kitchen. If you accidentally turn on the kettle without putting water inside first, it can damage the internal components since it will be heating nothing but itself. However, many models have a sensor that detects if the kettle is empty, and turns the heating element off to prevent unnecessary damage.
- Alerts: Some kettles may include a signal alert to tell you when the water is ready or when the device is on. While not necessarily a crucial feature, it can be nice to have both for safety and convenience.
Extra Features
If you want a top of the line electric kettle, then there are some other features you can get that will make your experience much more convenient and enjoyable. Some notable luxury features are:
- Quick Cooling: Some models have an external covering that keeps the outside of the kettle cool, even while the water is boiling inside. Other models are designed to cool down remarkably fast once the water has been emptied, so you don’t have to let it sit out and cool off.
- Adjustable Temperature: If you need hot water, but not necessarily boiling water, you can choose a model that lets you adjust the temperature to meet your needs
- Warming: If you want to keep your water hot after it has reached temp, some kettles feature a stay-hot function that maintains the temperature for a set amount of time, giving you more time to enjoy each cup of coffee (or tea)

The last kettle on our list is the KEK1522CA. This model is sort of a hybrid of the other two since it has more of a classic design, but it has more features like the 1722SX. I love the color of this unit, which is either a beautiful candy apple red or a bold onyx black. I also like the temperature gauge on this kettle, which resembles a car’s speedometer.
The KEK1522CA is a 1.5-liter capacity kettle that is made of stainless steel. A 1500 watt heating element will boil water in minutes. You can easily see when your water is ready by looking at the temperature gauge built into the side of the unit.

Final Verdict
When deciding between the three kettles, it’s difficult to pick a clear winner. However, I would have to say that my personal favorite is the 1522CA because of its modern conveniences packaged in a classic design.
